Family Reunions

Today was my mother's side, Whaley Family Reunion. It is always good to see the family that shows up each year. I must admit not as many came as usual. My mother is now the oldest member of the family. She and her youngest brother were there. The only other living brother could not come. His wife is sick and he stayed home with her.

As much fun as it is seeing the family, it is just as much fun when someone does a little extra and brings some of the old pictures of the older ones. Today we had a real treat. A lot of pictures that no one could identify, but these we are sure about. The first picture is of my mother's oldest sister, Queenie Whaley. She lived to be over 100 years old.

And this picture of one of her other sisters, Pene Whaley. She lived to be 87 years old.

We should all try our best to leave names on the backs of our pictures, so future generations will know who we are.

Yep, you are right about labeling our photo's.... I need to do better with that myself. What about all these digital photos we save; how will they ever identify those? LOL Is Pene the one who went blind?

I love to sit and look at old pictures...
I also love family reunions...my Hubby's side is always interesting...lol! Bunch of characters there!

What is sad is the many, many old vintage pictures that you can find in antique stores...

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Awesome pics. I have an aunt Queenie too. Well she past away in 1990, when she was in her 80's. She made my favorite cookies when I came to visit. They were called Frogs in her community, and I have heard them called "spiders" and chocolate macaroons... yum. they always remind me of her, when I see them.

I have some old pictures with no names and I'm guilty of the same thing I'm afraid.

If I can find them, I have a couple of neat ones back in my early posts. I'll send you the links.

My Grandmother Beeston's maiden name was Walley (spelled different thatn your relatives). I have old photos of my great Grandparents (2 couples, Beeston and Walley). They are a real family treasure.

In Mattawa, Ontario there is a number of Whaleys. They are in the forest industry.

Yes, you are right about we should always write names on the back of photos. I try to do that with every print. Both sides of my family too has photos of family that we do not know the names.

littlepenpen asked about the digital photos. Good question! The only thing that I know to do is to rename each photo to match the person. The way that I do it is:
Example:
deborah.jpg
or if a have more than one:
Example:
deborah1.jpg, deborah2.jpg

But not all of them - it would take me three years! lol -
Something to think about for sure.

Not too long ago, I read an article about saving manuscripts and/or photos to hard drive. The man recommended to always keep a regular physical print out to accompany the digital in case of file or disk corruption.Something else to think about....

Ann, your family pics are neat - and Queenie is a great name - very different. I'm glad that you got to enjoy your family.

Wonderful that you had a family get-together. Even tho not all came.

Oh yes, put info on pictures! I had a whole ancient holder of pictures, which I had no idea of who they were. -sigh- So sad.

It was fun to see the pictures and everybody at the reunion. Hope you get to borrow the originals from Lottie and make copies.

You are so right about labelling old photos. Now my mother has gone, there is noone left to ask about her family's old photos. We did go through a lot before she died, luckily. My children dont seem to be interested in their ancestry, nor does my granddaughter. Perhaps when they get older..

My MIL used to write entire paragraphs on the back of photos. At first I thought she was being excessive but now I appreciate that she did this.

Your aunts each look so elegant for the time periods when they were photographed.

Did you know there is a Whaleyville up here on the Maryland - Delaware line? Right off 113, not far from Ocean City, MD. Maybe the original people there were your kin????????

Ann,

If you are going to label the back of photos, go to a camera shop and ask them for a special pen that doesn't bleed into the photo paper over time. Photos can be ruined by writing on them with ball point pens. I forget what those pens are called, but a camera shop should know.

I'm glad you had a great time at your family reunion. Yesterday we had a birthday for my mother who turned 80 today. She had a great time.

Family reunions are so nice, and old pictures are such a treasure. I have very few, since we lost most of those things way back when. But the ones of my grandparents I treasure. Your old pictures are neat!
