How Long Do You....

How long do you keep things? Everything becomes sentimental to me. Especially if my grandchildren made it. I have all kinds of things tucked here and there that are so old, but I'm "saving" them.

The wooden "thing" next to the bird house is an example. What do you think it is?

It's a horse. My oldest grandson made it twenty years ago. It is made from old scraps of wood he found in my husband's barn. He painted it too, but the paint has washed off over these years. Our neighbor across the road came over to look at it and nailed it to this light pole. My grandson was about four years old when he made it.

One day my husband was cleaning up and he decided that thing would be thrown away. When I found out, I threw a royal "hissy fit". He went back and nailed it again to the light pole. Its still there today.

Ann,

The horse is adorable and yes, I would have through a "hissy" fit if someone tried to throw that out. LOL

I have everything that the boys have ever made for me, including pictures and cards. I have cards that Grandma gave me when I was young and also handkerchiefs that were gifts from her back then. I try to keep them neatly packed away. Every so often I take them out and enjoy the memories.

Small things are like a snapshot of time. I bet you can remember your grandson's face when he showed it to you.
I have things in the barn like that. My husband says they go in the trash if we move. I say they stay in the barn. We will simply keep the barn and sell the house!:>)

Oh dear. I find I am much the same frame of mind as you and I'm only on the second batch of children, let alone grandchildren. We shall have to remain here forever just to 'house' all the accumulated clutter. [very precious clutter!]
Cheers

I keep stuff like that too, Ann. I have a couple of boxes full of things that the kids and grankids have made for me. My favorite has always been the little clay pots that they made in school - I keep them in my office and sitting on bookshelves.

One day, your grandson might want to give that horse to his grandson - there will be a lot of history with it!

LOL Never ever under estimate the power of a "HISSY FIT".
You would fit right in with my crowd. We have stuff before "the conflict" or as others say "Civil War". Peace

That is a cute horsey! Good for you, grandma, for throwing that hissy fit!

My oldest granddaughter is 19 now, and I still have things she made and drew for me when she was like 4 and 5.

Have a great day, Ann!

Very sweet!

I struggle with knowing what to keep - Sometimes I just take a photo of something before I toss it and use that for my memories... But if it is something that makes you smile everytime you see it, it is definitely worth keeping!

Dear Ancient One, I had no problem knowing that it was a horse. I am glad you are keeping it.

I feel just as you. I think I have every card, letter or note any of my family have ever given me. I can not bring myself to throw them away. They are memories of precious things. I will always keep them. connie

p.s. praying for your friend in the hospital.

I definitely have the same problem. I found an old Easter card that youngest DS made us and you know I couldn't throw it away. By the way, the horse is precious.

Back to Got to vs Get to... I told a group of women one day that I had a moment of gratitude one morning taking out the garbage. 1- I was able to walk to get to the trash can, 2- that I was lucky enough to have garbage... there was a lot more to it - but you get the idea. It is all in the way we think about things. And that includes old wooden horsies. Love it! You should see MY collection!

This post made me smile. Made me think - My mother gave me a clock that was my grandmother's and great grandmother's - where you wind it is an envelope with a feather in it. My mother's instructions were to never throw it away. Well looked at it the other day - not much left of the feather - but then it is way over a 100 years old.

I get rid of things like that, when they fall apart.
My yard is full of things like that.
It's how I decorate and I like it!
