Let's Talk

ABOUT SCHOOL VIOLENCE

In our paper today on the front page there is an article about a stabbing at the Middle School (grades 5-8)in our little town. They are saying an eighth grade girl (age 15) went across the hall into a sixth grade room and stabbed a girl (age 15) with a 10-inch kitchen knife. The sixth grader is in the hospital and the eighth grader is being held in an area juvenile detention center.

Our question is what are 15 year old girls doing in sixth and eighth grades?

True; 15 year old girls need to be in another classroom altogether. What a mess!

I dont know how your grades work out, or what ages they should be, at what level.
But, I can't help but wonder, what sort of mind takes a huge knife to school??

It's really scary to realize that these days schools are no longer safe for kids, or even teachers, for that matter, even in small towns. If I had school aged kids today, I would home school them!

Meggie, most people age 15 would be in 10th grade and be in High School. The story being told is these two girls never got along. And both liked the same boy and he was no longer interested in either one.

Renie, home schooling would probably be best. I have one grandson attending a Christian private school. My other grandson dropped out of high school and is finishing up his work for his diploma at the community college. My other grandchildren are grown and either working or attending college.

Even though I teach right now in a public school (it gives me a paycheck and I feel like I'm helping kids) I am a homeschooler at heart. I homeschooled all my children and my daughter is planning to homeschool her soon to be born son. She was a public middle school teacher.

Yes, that should tell someone, somewhere, that trouble is brewing! There has to be a reason girls this age are still in elementary. All this and not to even mention how she got a knife into school.....

The World and people are changing(not for the better) I agree. It seems everything is esculating out of control, not only stabbing-shooting-mugging ect ect but work places forever scrimping and saving, causing them to cut staff - therefore people working harder and not being able to do their jobs properly, therfore jobs go wrong causing people get injured or die.Its getting to be a mad world, lets hope people see this before its too late.

Ann,

Catching up on your blog...

I don't know why these girls are still in elementary school, but the bigger question is why the need for violence? I think perhaps discipline and counseling is in order for these two.

On the other hand, it seems that this type of attitude is becoming prevalant among kids, especially girls. Now adays, they even video the fights and upload them to Internet sites like YouTube and MySpace. I guess they think it makes them look cool.

How alarming. First of all, no 15 year old should be in the same class as 6th and 8th graders. It would appear if they are that far behind, there have been warning signs for some time that there are problems. Someone dropped the ball for all the students including these girls. The focus is really on the families - which is so sad to know that our families today are in so much trouble. Our nation needs prayer.

Good Evening Ann,
Wow, this is a good subject. I don't want to get too caught up in it, because I won't know when to stop. LOL. Here at our elementary school it is just Kindergarten thru 6th grade. Then, the Junior Higs consists of 7th thru 9th grade. The Senior High is bussed over to another town and it is grades 10th thru 12th. I can't fathom a 15 year old being in the same class as 6th graders. It sounds like she may have failed a few times. It all starts at home. If the parents don't care, then the kids are going to say the heck with it too. Kids now a days are watching or seeing way too much violence on t.v. or the internet. We won't even let our kids have internet in their bedroom where they have a computer. I won't let them use mine either. If they want to get on the internet, they go to our local library every once in a while after school and get on it up there. They have it fixed where kids can and can't go. "THANKS" for sharing this with us. Well, take care my friend and have a great evening. May God Bless You and Yours.

Hugs,
Karen H.

At my small town middle school, a student brought guns to school and shot one of the teachers and then himself. It was said he was from a "good home." Even good homes need to lock up their guns.

sad isnt it?

school violence is scary. I am thankful we live in a small rural community BUT that does NOT make us any safer...

My town is very small. Things have really changed over the years and not for the better.

Tonight on the news they said the grandmother of the girl who did the stabbing, called the school a few minutes before it happened, and told them of her concerns and wanted the school to do something to keep the girls apart. Too little ... Too late...

New questions:

Why is grandmother raising this girl?

Why didn't grandmother keep the girl home from school?

Why? Why? We will probably never know.

I guess the girls were held back. My daughter who is 15 has an 18 year old girl in one of her classes. She failed to graduate last year and had to take some classes over. We also had an incident like this one at my dd's school at lunch time. Two girls fighting over a boy! I'm gad we will be homeschooling again next year!

Why kids live with grandparents -

Well, this is my perspective.

Today, we see a lot of this, grandparents having the sole responsibilty of raising their grandchildren.

But sometimes it may be for a good /legit reason. Maybe the parent(s) are in the military, maybe they have become disabled in some way and due to physical and/or mental limitations can no longer care for them. Perhaps the parents are dead.

However, much of the time, kids live with their grandparents for other reasons that are not so good.

Teenage pregnancy, parental drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, or abandoment are at the top of the list.

Sometimes it is none of the above.

A kid may have a very good home but decides that he/she no longer wants to follow their parents house rules. Out of desperation, the parents place the kid with the grandparents.

Some kids not only want to avoid house rules, but reject all discipline and authority, which ultimately shows up in the classroom - or the street.

Last, but not least, we now live in a society where discipline problems are attempted to be corrected by way of medication - namely Ritalin and anti-depressants. This is not to say that some kids don't need the medication, I just think medication is severely overused/prescribed.

Then we have the illegal drugs that kids take and get hooked on.

10 year old girls are coming home from school declaring that they have a boyfriend - and many parents think it's cute. These same girls worship our current Hollywood celebrities and hang onto their every word and action. Not to mention these celebrities latest diet and weight loss plan!

It's a vicious circle.

And today the rumor is that both the girl's families are going to sue the school. ???

The girl who was stabbed had to go back to the hospital over the weekend because her lung collasped.

That is weird. But more sad is why does this continue to be a common occurance in today's society? Its so sad.
