Daughters of the American Revolution

This is the home of the Major Benjamin May Chapter of the DAR. In 1930 Mr. and Mrs. AC Monk donated a lot for the erection of a Chapter House on land originally owned by Major Benjamin May.

Completed in 1938, it was the first Chapter House built in North Carolina.  This building was never actually a home.  Used more for meetings and gatherings. It does have a full kitchen with modern appliances (only the old sink was saved as was the working dumb waiter).  This building can now be used for weddings, family reunions, and other events as well as for the DAR functions.

My SIL is a member of the DAR and she was the one who showed our group through the building and explained what the DAR does for education, patriotism and education.   I did not take any inside pictures of our tours.  I did enjoy both tours.  If you are ever in Farmville, they have many, many, old homes.  This weekend the town is having it's Dogwood Festival.  Perfect time to enjoy this wonderful town.

Tour on Thursday

I was invited along to tour a couple of places with a group from my hometown.  This is the May Museum and Park in Farmville N.C.

It is always fun to get inside to see how these old homes look.  Interesting period furniture and interesting bits of history given by the tour guides.

The landscaping almost completely hides the old kitchen that always is detached from the old house.

We had fun and I'd be excited to get invited again when they tour old houses.

Look What My Sister Brought To Me

We've been in the process of clearing out some of my mother's things.  While my sister was at the dump, she called to tell me that someone had set off a birdbath and asked if I wanted it.  I said YES.  She said, now it really looks rough, are you sure? and I said YES again. So they delivered it right to my house. This makes me five.  She even brought the two birds that sit on the bath part.  I know where I want it to go.  Just got to get it over to the other side of the yard and set up. Sister (and BIL) are so good to me.

Do You Like My Bird?

I got it toward the end of the summer last year at a yard sale.  I've seen them on eBay in pairs.  I only have one.  I have it placed between the pot and the small flag holder to keep it from blowing over.

Spring, How I Love Thee

Coyote

My husband's friend told him that someone is keeping coyote in a woods on the county line.  Why, you ask?  I have no idea.  But we decided to see if we could find them.  This gated fence is their home.  Notice the electric wire.  I could hear it charging.  I dared not touch the gate.

I did venture a shot over the top.  I only have an old point and shoot camera.  These pictures can be made larger by clicking on them.

We counted six lying in the pathway.  I have no idea why those green plastic chairs are there.  There is a  lot I don't know about Coyote.

I stared at them and they stared at me.  They made no sounds.  Just looked.

So I said "good bye" and we drove away.  I'm glad they don't live closer.  Maybe I will recognize one in the wild if I should happen to have visitors.

Old Things I Like

Took a little ride out by the cotton gin to see if the dirt pile was high...  Husband was thinking of getting some to add to his garden.  Many people who have used this dirt told him that it was full of weed seed.  I think he's changed his mind about getting some.  We took the long way to get there.  I've passed this old store all my life and had never taken a picture of it.  So we turned around to get the picture.  We parked in this yard.  I don't think anyone lives here.

I wonder how long it can stand looking like this.  You would think that the next big wind would get it.  But I hope not !!

Purple and Gold

I just noticed these birds last Friday as we passed this very familar pond on HWY 102.  My two boys were baptized in this pond many years ago. 

Our local universary ECU uses the colors purple and gold.  At first I thought someone must have put them there to welcome the team home from an away game or something.  Someone informed me that they have been there since before Christmas.

When we passed there late on Friday, I thought there were more purple birds and they were much harder to see speeding by the pond on Hwy 102.  Today we turned onto the dirt road next to the pond, and I only saw these.

Mouths are Multipling

Remember way back when I posted that we must be rich since we fed so many things around here?  After my husband retired the second time, he sold some of the goats and gave away a lot of chickens.  We kept enough to have plenty of eggs which we mostly gave away or cooked up for the dog when we accumulated too many.  Well, don't look now, but it is starting up again.  I think he has three hens setting on eggs.  These chicks hatched not too long ago. 

My husband often tells me how he loved raising chickens, rabbits, etc. when he was a boy.  And he always tells of how his granny would ask him every day  if he had fed those animals.  He said he would sometimes see her sneeking out there to make sure they got fed.  He always throws a can of corn out on the ground between the barns for the roosters and hens that run around the yard.  The squirrels have learned that he does this and they run over for their share.

Oh well, I get to go to the Tractor store and look around at the cute yard things they have while he's buying feed.
